Eine Strafkolonie in Südafrika im Jahre 1725. Hier treffen der wegen Ladendiebstahls zu zehn Jahren Haft verdonnerte Claas Blank (Rouxnet Brown) und der wegen "Sodomie" verurteilte holländische Matrose Rijkhaart Jacobsz (Neil Sandilands) aufeinander. Die Gefängnisbedingungen sind rau, aber nachdem Claas den jungen schwulen Rijkhaart anfänglich als bloße Triebabfuhr benutzt, beginnt seine Homophobie im Laufe der Jahre zu bröckeln. Unerwartet für beide entwickelt sich zwischen den Männern eine intensive Romanze. Hoffnung keimt auf, als der (an Claas deutlich interessierte) englische Botaniker Virgil Niven (Shaun Smyth) die Beiden vom Steineschleppen erlöst und ihnen Arbeit als Gärtner verschafft. In a prison camp in South Africa in 1725 the black inmate Claas meets the gay sailor Rijkhaart. After many years of depriving imprisonment their bizarre relationship finally turns into real love. When they get caught and face trial Claas comes out, not fearing the punishment. Unusual, slightly surreal film with blatant sex scenes that manages to address issues from imperialism and racism to homophobia.

Based on transcripts of a sodomy trial discovered by Lewis in South African archives, Proteus recreates the relationship between imprisoned Dutch sailor, Rijkhaart Jacobsz, and Claas Blank, a wrongly-imprisoned young African herder.

The two men, assigned to assist a visiting botanist in the prison garden, are drawn to each other despite mutual prejudices, and embark on what would become a 10-year clandestine affair until their discovery and horrific punishment.
