Selten gibt es Filme auf einem schwullesbischem Film Festival zu sehen, in die man unbedingt seine Eltern, Geschwister sowie sämtliche schwulen Freunde mitnehmen sollte. Doch MAMBO ITALIANO ist genau diese Sorte Film.

Nach seinem riesigen Erfolg auf der Bühne in Kanada, hat Regisseur Émile Gaudreault (WEDDING NIGHT) es mit explosivem Witz, einer Tonne Charme und viel "Mamma Mia" geschafft, das Stück in die Leinwandsprache zu übersetzen.

Angelo (Luke Kirby, LOST AND DELIRIOUS) und Nino (Peter Miller), kennen sich seit ihrer Schulzeit, in der sie auch des öfteren Gelegenheit dazu hatten, sich nachts im Zelt näher zu kommen. Während Angelo mittlerweile versucht, erfolgreicher Drehbuchautor zu werden, hat sich Nino für den Polizeidienst entschieden. Die beiden Sonnyboys stehen stets unter der pastarollenden Fuchtel ihrer aus Italien eingewanderten Eltern. Als Nino endlich genug von Mama Maria (Ginette Reno, LÉOLO) und Papa Gino (Paul Sorvino, THE COOLER) hat, zieht er kurzerhand aus – mutig allen Drohungen trotzend, dass dies den frühen Tod seiner Eltern bedeuten wird. Die erhitzten Gemüter beruhigen sich jedoch schnell, als auch Nino "Ciao Mamma" sagt und Angelos Roommate wird.

Alles wäre tutto bene, würden sie nicht eines Nachmittags in flagrante delicto von Angelos Schwester (Claudia Ferri, VIVA LA FRIDA!) bei der schönsten Sache der Welt ertappt werden. Coming Out Italian Style! Den Tränen folgen die Flüche, der Verbannung folgt ein familiäres Abendessen mit allen Beteiligten, zu dem auch – rein zufällig natürlich – la bella Pina (Marke Farbtopf Make Up und toupierte Löwenmähne) eingeladen ist...
Werden sich Nino und Angelo gegen "la famiglia" durchsetzen können? MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING auf Italienisch und krönender Abschluss von verzaubert 2003!

_Maria and Gino (Ginette Reno and Paul Sorvino), emigrated from Italy to Montreal in the 50’s and married after their arrival in “the new world”, a world they still haven’t quite gotten used to. Their world is shattered when their son, Angelo (Luke Kirby), decides to get a place of his own. “What is so wrong with living with your parents until you get married?” they ask. They are relieved however, when Angelo’s childhood buddy, Nino (Peter Miller), decides to move in with their son. After all, Nino is an old family friend and he’s a respectable cop. Their relief is short lived, as they find out that Nino and Angelo are much more than mere roommates-they are (gasp) lovers! All hell breaks loose (Italian-style, of course!) Horror is followed by general outcry, disbelief is followed by indignation, the battlefield is cleared, and “tutta la famiglia” goes to war!

Will Angelo and Nino be able to resist the gargantuan pressure coming at them from all sides and find the strength to survive as a couple? Will Nino be able to withstand the seductive charms of the voluptuous Pina? Will Angelo find the courage to fully come out of the closet and confront the whole of them while he accepts himself?

Mambo Italiano is hysterically funny and deeply moving. Adapted from the successful play by the same name, the movie explores further the subtleties and complexities of this quintessential Italian family – a family straddling the cultures, traditions, and mores of the old and new worlds.
