Ein klein bisschen wie im Märchen dürfen wir uns bei dieser warmherzigen, positiven Lovestory fühlen. Denn lesbisches Coming-out im England der späten 50er Jahre war sicher keineswegs leicht. Striktes Klassendenken und tradierte Rollenzuteilungen bestimmten das Gros der Frauenschicksale.

Doch mit Ellen Hardy erleben wir eine andere Geschichte. Als Hausfrau und Mutter lebt sie in ärmlichen Verhältnissen. Ihr Ehemann, ein grobschlächtiger, simpler Mensch, arbeitet in der hiesigen Fabrik. Einziger Lichtblick ist ihr 10-jähriger Sohn, der eine besondere künstlerische Begabung zeigt. Seine neue Lehrerin Kathy engagiert sich über alle Maßen, das junge Talent zu fördern.

Aber stecken noch weitere Beweggründe hinter diesem erstaunlichen Enthusiasmus? Bereits als sich Ellen und Kathy das erste Mal anlächeln, ahnen wir, dass hier die Liebe ihre Fangarme ausstreckt.

Auch wenn Ellen anfangs über die unbekannten Gefühle verwirrt ist, beginnt sie sich schnell aus dem Schattendasein ihres Mannes zu emanzipieren und, gemeinsam mit ihrem Kind, ihrem Herzen zu folgen.

_It’s 1957 and Ellen Hardy shares the fate of many married women in industrial North England: men are the providers, women the angel of the house. Unlike others though, she feels vaguely dissatisfied. When she meets Mrs. Thompson, her ten-year-old son’s new teacher, Ellen is immediately attracted to the powerful woman who discovers and encourages her boy’s artistic talent. As Ellen’s husband, an undemanding factory worker, can’t understand why people would pay money for his son’s paintings, Ellen and Kathy’s friendship speedily develops. When Ellen realizes her increasingly strong feelings for Kathy, she seems at a loss what to do. Will she reach out and follow her destiny?

_It's the late 1950s in a small industrial working class town in the North of England. Not surprisingly, given the rigid sexual hierarchy and repression of the time, wife and mother Ellen is unhappy with her life. The one time of the day she is able to find some joy is in conversations with her son's attractive teacher, Kathy.

As the two women's friendship gradually develops into something more, Ellen's relationship with her husband becomes strained, and both women find themselves confronted with a realization almost unthinkable in their less-accepting era.

A powerful tale of suppressed sexuality in which poignant and sharply observed social commentary is interlaced with a tender romance. In the excellent cast, former Casualty star Barbara Marten shines brightest as the working class mother struggling with her feelings for another woman.
