Man möge uns verzeihen, dass wir diesen Film zu unserem Non-Gay Favorite des Jahres 2003 erkoren haben. Wir waren hilflos. Denn das Auge genießt mit. Außerdem handelt es sich um den größten Box Office Hits in der Geschichte Finnlands. So konnten wir es uns einfach nicht verkneifen, diesen charmanten und witzigen Film einzuladen, der sowohl durch eine originelle Handlung, als auch mit Darstellern von selten herber Schönheit begeistert.

Auf Tatsachen basierend, erzählt der Film die Geschichte der Brüder Otto, Matti, Ilkka und Eero. Die vier leiden unter dem brutalen Joch ihres paranoiden Vaters, der mit der Bibel in der Hand das Böse hinter jeder Ecke vermutet. Fernsehen, Kaugummi, ja selbst neue Jeans oder gar Elektrizität gelten als Werkzeuge Satans.

Die Geschwister lesen den ganzen Tag Comics und stemmen Gewichte, sammeln Beeren und leben von den Almosen der Gemeinde. Als aber Papa Takkunen wegen seiner unkontrollierten Gewaltausbrüche in die Psychiatrie eingewiesen wird, stehen die Jungs mittellos da. Was bleibt ihnen anderes übrig, als Spielautomaten zu knacken? Doch damit nicht genug. Bald ist im Landkreis keine Tankstelle und kein Banksafe vor den Daltonbrüdern des Nordens sicher.

Auf immer waghalsigere Weise verstehen sie es, die Polizei an der Nase herumzuführen. Dabei verfolgen sie letztendlich nur den einen Traum: So wie alle anderen zu sein.

For all their life, Otto, Matti, Ilkka and Eero Takkunen have been under the thumb of their tyrannical father who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. Strict discipline is kept with raised fists, belt lashes and even a sickle, and child benefits have gone down the drain. Drawing inspiration from the Holy Bible the despotic father believes firmly on the evil nature of television, chewing gum and fashion. He raises his children under unrelenting cruelty.

The boys are used to getting more sympathy from the animals on their farm than from the rest of the society. Their home has no electricity and they survive on charity, eating mainly blueberry mush. They spend their time reading comics and working out, but they never resort to violence.

When their father is put away into a mental institution, the boys are left to manage on their own. Adrift without help or guidance, they make ends meet by robbing slot machines. They get by, but hunger for more, and soon start robbing unmanned gas stations.
