Writer/director, MARK REYES crafts a poignantly-moving
short film exploring forbibben love set amidst the seedy underbelly
of the Manila gay cruising scene in LAST FULL SHOW.
Teenage high
school student, CRISPIN, comes from a well-to-do family. He's
picked up by his DRIVER every day after school and
regularly asks to be taken to an old movie theater in the heart
of the city where he's secretly free to experiment with his burgeoning
sexuality. Although young, Crispin is no innocent babe in the
woods. He's been frequenting the scene for some time, getting his
rocks
off with anonymous partners in the sexually-charged darkness
of the old movie house. His wise, old driver is aware of what he's
up to, but he knows better than to offer advice or interfere,
even
though he cares deeply for the young man. One day, Crispin comes
under the notice of two experienced cruisers, GARDO and JESS,
both in their 30's.
These two have been playing the field for so
long that the scene is starting to wear thin on them, particularly
Gardo, who is hungry
for something deeper than the shallowness which surrounds him.
They watch with interest as the handsome Crispin spurns the advances
of an OLDER CRUISER and Jess throws down a challenge to the sexually
confident Gardo, daring him to seduce the younger man. Gardo
takes up the challenge and the two find they are instantly attracted
to each other.
Over countless movies, the attraction grows from
unbridled lust to genuine love and affection, much to the alarm
of both Jess and
the driver. Despite warnings of the dangers ahead, Crispin and
Gardo drift along blissfully, their feelings deepening. Soon
they find the courage to start dating outside the relative safety
of
the theater, sharing meals at popular restaurants and taking
jeepney rides together, not caring who witnesses their forbidden
love.
Both Jess and the driver are now more concerned, particularly
when Crispin presents Gardo with an expensive chain and pendant
- a
treasured family heirloom.
Gardo is moved by the gesture and we
see his hardened outer shell soften as the two of them draw closer
with each date. Crispin is
so madly infatuated that he builds a shrine in Gardo's honor,
pinning all the movie ticket stubs representing each of their precious
encounters to a corkboard. Unable to hold his silence any longer,
the driver intercepts Gardo outside the movie house one night
and
subtly urges him to end the relationship for Crispin's sake.
His words strike Gardo at his very core and he is forced to make
a
difficult decision, putting Crispin's well-being above his own
self-interest. Alone in the theater, Crispin deals with the heartbreak
as the realization hits him that their steamy love affair is
suddenly over.
